A Visit to the Eternal City—and a Moment with the Pope
This past October, a remarkable group of pilgrims traveled to Rome for a journey rooted in faith, fraternity, and reflection. Representing a wide cross-section of labor & civic leaders from Chicago, the pilgrimage blended moments of deep spiritual connection with opportunities for dialogue and discernment, all set against the backdrop of Rome’s sacred spaces and the Jubilee Year’s call to renewal. For many, this was more than a trip—it was a chance to walk together in faith, honor Catholic social teaching, and encounter the living Church in meaningful and unexpected ways.

The group visited three of Rome’s Holy Doors, celebrated Mass in historic basilicas, and laid floral tributes at the tombs of Pope Francis and the last High King of Gaelic Ireland. They also visited Borgo Laudato Si at Castel Gandolfo, a sustainability village inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical. One unforgettable moment came mid-week, when the pilgrims had the rare opportunity to join a private gathering at the Vatican and greet the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. The experience left many reflecting on their own spiritual vocations and renewed commitment to justice, stewardship, and mercy.

Led by Father Clete Kiley, chaplain for the Chicago Federation of Labor, the pilgrimage was a testament to the enduring bond between faith and work. Masses were offered throughout the week—including at St. Gioacchino Church, built in honor of Pope Leo XIII, the “workers’ pope.” Also accompanying the group was Fr. Manny Dorantes, who presided at the moving outdoor liturgy in the gardens of Castel Gandolfo. Whether sharing prayer, breaking bread, or engaging in thoughtful conversation, the pilgrims found themselves united by a common mission: to deepen their faith and walk humbly in solidarity with one another.
